Dogs are Angels
Yesterday, my husband and I had to take our dog to a veterinary specialist because, starting in late October, we noticed a crackling sound when she would take deep breaths. Since then, we've had X-rays, blood work, and lots of appointments that have resulted in a big question mark. The biggest stressor, aside from worrying about Pollyanna, is that one of the potential tests that we can do will cost about $2,000 (and we've already spent close to $1,000 for the tests so far). However, she really is part of our family and we've been nervous about this whole situation - namely, the unknown factor.
We're very lucky to live 6 minute (!) from a 24 hour emergency vet/vet specialist, where we have been working with an internist. While we were waiting for our appointment, a couple walked out of the exam room with a very old looking small dog in their arms. The woman was crying and Sean and I were immediately heartbroken for whatever this family was going through. When she saw Pollyanna, she came over to pet her and smiled as she told us how cute our dog was. She (like everyone else who first meets her) asked what breed Pollyanna is as she stroked her fur an Polly wagged her tail.

As we talked, the woman said, though tears, that her dog has cancer. She asked what was wrong with Polly and we told her that we were still trying to figure it out. She looked into Polly's face and said, "You're going to be okay, puppy. I just know it!" Then, she looked at me and said, "Dogs are angels on earth. I really believe that." As she walked away, we wished her luck.
But I was moved by this sort encounter, because she made a very true statement. Dogs, in their own way, really are angels on earth. They teach us to appreciate the little things (like a car ride, a meal, or a walk!) and to love unconditionally. I have been reminded, through Pollyanna's health mystery and especially by meeting the woman at the vet, that losing a pet can be one of the most difficult things to endure. Regardless of that fact that I have lost many pets (and will lose more as my life goes on), I would never stop being a pet owner. Having a pet is one of life's greatest joys. Dogs are, after all, angels!
So sorry to hear about your sick "angel". She's a total cutie-pie!
