A Year from Today...

I read something recently that really struck me.
A year from now, you’ll wish you had started today.

This quote made me think of two specific things.

First, I thought of the weight that I have so desperately wanted to lose over the past few
months years, but that I have admittedly not worked very hard to lose. Had I started a year ago, I would be in a much healthier place right now. Instead, I made a half-assed attempt to lose the weight and gave up much quicker than I should have. It seems to me that the older I get, the faster time goes, and even though days themselves tend to drag, weeks and months somehow fly by. How is that even possible? Anyways, if I start TODAY to work toward my weight loss goals, a year from now I will be a much different (lighter!) person.

The other thing I thought of was writing, but by writing I do not necessarily mean this blog (though I absolutely need to make a distinct effort to write it more frequently). I have been carrying a story around inside of me (I'm not sure how else to explain it!) for quite some time, but for no real reason have been putting off writing it. I cannot help but wonder where I would be today if I had started writing it a year ago. Finished? Half-way done? Scrapped entirely? I will never know, except that, a year from now, I will hopefully look back at this blog post and be able to acknowledge the fruits of my year-long efforts.

In the end, only time will tell (literally) where my year of healthy choices and frequent writing will have taken me, but though I do not wish time away, I look forward to seeing where I will be a year from now.

I encourage all of you to think about this as well. If you had started something a year ago, where could you be today? I’m willing to wait a year to find out. Are you?

  1. Good point about starting a year ago. I often think about what my weight and life would be like today had I started my weigh loss effort a year ago instead of waiting until now. And you are right, time flies by fasting the older you get It really, really does!

  2. I'm happy to encourage you with writing. I'll be better with writing after July when I have a major project done, but we can still cheer-lead for each other :)

A blog is a good first step. It gets you in the habit of writing somewhat regularly, and gets the "juices flowing" for other creative work.
