Charleston & Hilton Head

Last week, my husband & I took our first vacation together since our honeymoon to Walt Disney World last June. We flew into Charleston, SC, where we stayed for two nights, and then we rented a car and drove to Hilton Head Island, SC, where we met his parents and sister for the rest of the week.

While we were in the area, we also took a 1/2 day trip to Savannah, GA. It was a relaxing and romantic time for me and Sean, and it was really nice to spend some time with his family (who we don't get to see as often as we'd like).

While I was there, I learned a few things about Southern culture that I thought would be worth sharing:

  • Southern hospitality is a real thing. People all over (but especially in Savannah) were SO, SO nice. I never felt like people up north were mean, but people were incredibly friendly down south.

  • The food is good. Real good. We had more sweet tea, corn bread, BBQ pork, grits, and mint juleps than we can count. I gained two pounds on my vacation, but boy was it worth it!

  • Things are cheap in the south. Very cheap. As an example, we saw GORGEOUS townhomes being built near a beautiful river just outside of Charleston that started at $120,000. In the area of the country where I live, $250,000 won't buy you something half as nice as what we saw (I googled the complex out of curiosity to see what kinds of amenities there were)! Another example is that we paid $2.98 for gas - which is about $3.55 where I live. That's a BIG difference!
Our trip was, overall, lovely! I visited the Old Slave Mart Museum, a southern plantation, the (warm) ocean, old cobblestone streets, and the park where Forrest Gump waited for the bus and said his famous "Life is like a box of chocolates" line.

I am so grateful for this vacation, especially considering the week I have had since I returned from my trip... which is a whole different story. More to come!
