Me, the worrier
My mom and sister - who I do not see nearly enough - are coming to visit this weekend. The reason for the trip is for us to see an Ingrid Michaelson concert (I bought tickets for my sister's 21st birthday gift in May), so the plan was for them to drive down on Friday with enough time to hang out in our apartment & grab a bite to eat before the show. They would stay through the weekend and leave on Monday morning.
But, in true mom & sister fashion, I received phone call last night saying that they were going to leave a day early. As excited as I was to hear this, my immediate thoughts were "oh no - when am I going to have time to shop and clean before they get here?" My average standard of living is already slightly cleaner than my mom & sister's (God love 'em), but as the only clean-freak family member, I immediately began stressing about that status of my place. As such, I promptly hung up the phone and organized/cleaned our apartment until I was satisfied.
Fast-forward to this afternoon (just a few hours ago) when I saw a local weather alert that warned "heavy thunderstorms, gusting winds, and potential hail and possibly even a tornado." Knowing that my mom and sister would be driving RIGHT through the "danger zone," I called them to ask that they consider leaving tomorrow, so as to not put themselves at risk. And what response did I get? "We'll be fine. We'll leave an hour earlier than planned and see you tonight. Don't worry!"
Famous. Last. Words.
I am a worrier. I always have been, and (most likely) always will be. My mom's oldest sister, my aunt Barb, is very much a tell-it-like-it-is kind of person who often says that I will lose some of my nervousness when I have more life experience under my belt, but I am not so sure.
Or, I could do as my dad suggests - "If you don't like worrying, then just don't." (He actually said these words to me as I was in hysterics over my car breaking down in the middle of a busy highway.)
Despite these suggestions (and the countless others that I will spare you), I am quite worried about my mom & sister's trip today and hope that they are safe on the road and pull over if the weather gets too bad. On the other hand, though, I can't WAIT to spend quality time with the two of the best women on earth!
