Independence Day

Happy {almost} 4th of July!

All of my childhood Independence Days blend together into a mixture of family, food, sparklers, and fireworks. But when I think back over the last five years or so, I can remember exactly where I was for the 4th of July and have wonderful memories.

2008 - Sean & I worked at Northwestern University for the summer at the Center for Talent Development (CTD) and watched the fireworks with our co-workers along Lake Michigan.

2009 - I had just moved to Rhode Island and was invited to attend a local celebration with my boss/friend and her family (hubby & young son). We ate lots of junk food and, again, watched a firework show.

2010 - My close friends from Rhode Island got together and BBQ'd delicious food, drank a little too much sangria, and sang some amazingly awful karaoke.

2011 - The same close friends from Rhode Island celebrated with our second annual 4th of July party, where we enjoyed more delicious food, sangria, went for a dip in the pool, and played stupid (but very fun) board games all night.

2012 - Sean & I were living away from said friends, so we walked to the local 4th of July celebration (fireworks, food trucks, etc.) and passed a number of parties at houses in our neighborhood. We felt bad for ourselves that we didn't have anyone else to celebrate with, but at least enjoyed each other's company!

2013 - This year, we're having our close family and friends over for a 4th of July party in our very own house! I still can't believe how much has changed in the past year, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Happy 4th, everyone, and happy birthday, America!
