Favorite Quote

Today's "blog every day in May" prompt is my favorite quote!

This is actually really difficult for me because I love so many quotes. When I was much younger, I used to have a Microsoft Word document full of my favorite quotes, and I would often re-read them over and over and relate them, even if in a small way, to my menial life.

Instead of selecting my favorite quote ever (how on earth would I decide?) I'm going to have to simply select my favorite quote today... and hope that that's enough!
I've learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life. - Maya Angelou
I love this quote, first and foremost, because I love Maya Angelou and have an incredible amount of respect for her as a poet, professional, and especially as a person. But in my line of work (which is helping people to determine the correct career and navigating how to get there), making a living is a huge focus. And it is, obviously, an important one. But I think that for me and many others, the making a living part of your life (work) is only a part of your life - it shouldn't be the other way around. My first professional job, for a variety of reasons, made me feel as though my life was a part of my work. Now, I (thankfully) can see how unhappy that made me and am in a place where my life is the primary focus and making a living is secondary (albeit important).

I hope that all of my readers agree!
