Friendship

Last night, I had a really great conversation with John, one of my best friends from home. He and I grew up one street away from each other (actually, our backyards were diagonal so we'd cut through them to visit each other) but became really close in 7th grade. We would spend summers at "the creek," our nearby hangout to which we would ride our bikes, and enjoyed countless hours goofing around at each other's houses. We were in choir and musicals together and spent lots of time singing in harmony around the piano. We had tons of inside jokes and, despite a few minor hiccups, remained very close friends throughout high school.

I was also blessed with two other close friends from home - Jen, who joined my 5th grade class mid-year and became an instant friend, and Katie, who sat next to me in 1st & 2nd grade and shared my first crush. Although both of these friendships also had hiccups (I refer to those as "the lost middle school years"), we became very close again in high school and John, Jen, Katie and I were pretty inseperable during that time. I know many people complain about high school and would never, ever want to go back, but I would travel back in time in a heartbeat if it meant spending more time with these wonderful people!

This picture perfectly sums up the amount of fun we always had together!

Our lives have all changed a lot in the past 10 or so years - Katie is engaged and lives in Boston with her wonderful fiance Chris, John is loving city life in Chicago, and Jen and I are both married and just bought houses only 3 miles (what are the chances?) from each other and are both expecting babies in late fall!

It's rare that the four of us are reunited anymore, and when we are it's usually for a very special occasion. We were all together for Jen's wedding in 2009 and I was thrilled to have all three of them at mine in 2011.

Life goes by fast, and I still can't believe that the four of us have been friends for as long as we have. Even though we are all living very separate lives, I am very thankful that these wonderful people are still a part of mine. They are some of the kindest, bravest, most hilarious people I know and I will always love them dearly!
