Friends Become Family
Dear baby girl,
Happy Friday!
Friday has always been my favorite day of the week, because there's so much excitement and anticipation for the weekend ahead (even if it becomes Sunday night in the blink of an eye). This Friday is no exception. Your daddy and I have "Friday night date night" planned for tonight. Since we're trying to save money, we'll probably end up having dinner at home and watching a movie with Polly & Ming... but you know what? That's okay with me. Time with my little family is my favorite time, even if we are just hanging out around the house.
Tomorrow (Saturday) I have an exciting day planned. I'm meeting my mom and Aunt Barb at Eastview (my absolute FAVORITE mall - I can't wait to bring you there!) for window shopping and visiting, and then I'm going apple picking with the Lewis family.
I haven't mentioned them in this blog yet, so let me give a quick overview (although by the time you read this, I imagine that you'll know them as Aunt Liz and Uncle Steve). I met Steve & Liz in the fall of 2006. I had spent that summer babysitting for a set of twin baby girls in Pittsford, and received a call from that family asking if I'd be interested in picking up another babysitting job for another set of twins who were moving to the area from Chicago and didn't know anybody in Rochester (they were acquaintances because the grandfather of twins #1 worked with the mom of twins #2). (Plus, once you have twin experience, you're a hot commodity to parents of twins!) I was always looking for a little extra money and, more importantly, love babies, so I enthusiastically said yes and had a quick phone conversation with Liz (mom of twins #2) who explained that her husband, Steve, was a stay at home dad to Eden and Tim (3 months) and their big brother, Sean (5 years). They were looking for someone to assist around the house with the babies so Steve could run errands, get a little sleep, and just have some time to himself each week.
Steve & Liz reminded me a lot of my Aunt
Anne and Uncle Mike, so I felt comfortable with them right away, and
their 3 kids were absolutely adorable and incredibly well behaved. I
can't say for sure when, but at some point they became more than employers (or even friends) and became like family to me.
I
babysat for them until I graduated from college in May of 2009 and
moved to Rhode Island for graduate school. I still remember my last day
and how heartbreaking it was to leave. Luckily, they all came to visit
me in Rhode Island that summer and we had a wonderful time together!
Hey, maybe Sean (or Eden, or Tim) will end up babysitting you some day! Ah, the circle of life!

| Eden & Tim (and me!) sometime in 2010 |
In
summer 2008, Sean & I worked at the Center for Talent Development
at Northwestern University, and the Lewis family was visiting their family
at the same time (in the same suburb of Chicago!), so we were even able
to see them that summer for a day trip/tour of the city and a birthday
celebration for the twins' second birthday.
Sean
& I had just gotten engaged, and while they were visiting us on
that trip I asked Eden to be our flower girl, Tim to be our ring bearer,
and Sean to be a junior usher at our wedding in summer 2011.
Since
we moved back to Rochester, we've seen the Lewis family quite a bit. We
even began a new apple picking/baking tradition for each fall (to be
continued this weekend)! Our house is only about 10 minutes from theirs
and we are so thankful to know that we have them nearby.
Looking
back, the most valuable relationships that I developed in college
(other than my relationship with Sean) were my relationships with the
Lewis family. I am so thrilled to know them - they're some of the
funniest, most caring, generous people I've ever met - and am so excited
for you to grow up with them as part of our family.
Hey, maybe Sean (or Eden, or Tim) will end up babysitting you some day! Ah, the circle of life!
Love,
MommyThere are friends, there is family, and there are friends who become family. - Unknown
